Question

Is it normal for a post office worker to ask: "What are you sending today?" The woman working at the branch near campus asked customer after customer -- and they all answered! Am I correct in thinking that our mail is private? I wanted to say, "None of your damn business!" when she asked me, but instead said, "Something for my dad." Help me out. Is this being asked from branch to branch or is she just nosy?

It's a rude question, actually, and according to both Emily Post and Miss Manners, the appropriate response to a rude question of any kind is "Why do you ask?"

While intrusive, postal workers are supposed to ask to see if you have flammables, liquids, or need insurance.
They ask all the time at my post office so I finally asked them why. It was a rather fascinating conversation. My lovely postal worker said they have run across a few people sending little pets (like chicks and mice) in the mail with no air holes so they help the customer repack so the wee ones can breathe.
That or it was just a clever and distracting response to cover up being noisy. :)

Way, way, way, wait. You can send pets through the mail as long as you provide an airhole????? WTF? Really?

i went in a shop to buy something the other day and the cashier said, "Okay, now what's your name?" I asked her why she needed to know and she said it was part of the transaction. what's going on here? just let me buy the little cloth for cleaning glasses okay? And the spray. no questions needed.

Our postal workers are the same ones every time I go in there. The only question they've ever asked me is whether I was sending a book. Apparently there's a better rate for books and they try to help me out by saving me money. Otherwise, they only other question I get is, "Would you like to buy stamps today?" Not nosy. But your postal workers are plain nosy. Next time I think the best advice was to ask why they are inquiring. I"d like to hear the answer to that one.

At least they didn't ask for your phone number. I'm so tired of stores asking for that. I always tell them I'd rather not give it. Then they always tell me it's just for coupon purposes...but that makes no sense to me. I never give it.
