Mostly, I'm Terrified

I start teaching on Tuesday at my alma mater, Carleton College.  When I began there as a student over sixteen years ago (SIXTEEN YEARS AGO?!?), I felt rather certain that I had landed there by some mistake of destiny and that I didn't actually fit amid the crowd of super-achiever and smarty-pants students.  Naturally, I am feeling the same way about teaching there as a visiting instructor in education.

As a student, I got over the feeling of not fitting there and found Carleton to be the most perfect school for my interests and ideas and for shaping who I would become -- and continue to become -- in the world.

I am doing my best to trust that it will once again challenge me in all the right and important ways as I develop who I'll be as a professor too.

You fit in as a "super-achiever" and "smarty-pants" as a student there because you are both those things, so I'm sure you will fit in as a professor there too!

Adam says you were a favorite prof of the post-baccs last year. He seemed very pleased that I am your friend. ;)

I'm sure you'll be a big hit at Carelton, too. Very excited for you!!

Hey, nerves are good - keeps you on your toes. Trouble is, you're always on your toes. And it turns out, you (almost) always turn out great at what you've put your mind to achieve. Well, there was that time when you tried to pack for a ski trip and didn't have ski pants and then ended up being carried down the mountain (not because of the pants though).... Aside from that mishap, I have no doubt you'll learn alongside your college students and together you'll both turn out for the better.
