Just some slapdash thoughts that have very little to do with anything and a lot to do with everything.

Torture
Our pediatrician told us Sam is old enough to cry himself to sleep. We're giving it a try. I've been glued to the monitor for 9 minutes now. That boy sure has healthy lungs.
This was the hardest thing ever. It didn't work for our kiddo until he was about 15 months old, BUT.... it has worked for tons of people we know. It's nice you can actually get a visual on the crying. We didn't have that back in the day. Not sure if that's an improvement or not. Hang in there. And don't feel bad if you have to delay the event for later. Some of these small people seem to be extremely powerful forces. I just have a feeling Sam's of this ilk.
It's definitely, definitely worth a try!! Stick with it for a week or two, if you can. I used to take an alcoholic beverage outside to drink during the crying. That helped.
If it doesn't work I agree with lh. Some of the kids are just too powerful. If this is the case with Sam, he's in very good company. ;)
Thanks for the advice and good luck wishes, friends! After I tried this a couple of times yesterday, I decided it was stupid -- for now. We leave for Argentina tomorrow and all sleep training success will likely be for naught. So, we'll try again when we return.
Sam may just be too feisty for this, but if he turns out to be anything like Quinn, Shef, or Mac, I certainly cannot complain!

OMG! It must be soooo hard to watch and listen to... good luck.
Good luck!
