Sam's nanny had to take some time off recently, so I've been home for an entire week with an overtired toddler who refuses to take an afternoon nap. I realize that he's probably transitioning to one nap a day, but I also know he's a pretty willful child who will just decide not to sleep now and again. Yesterday, at the library, I confessed to another mother that Sam was refusing to sleep because I thought it seemed pretty obvious that he was tired and that I was, thereby, a terrible mother. Her response was, "I remember that stage. I'm sure he'll be taking one three or four hour nap very soon." Yes, lady. I'm sure he will. And by that I mean, I won't be holding my breath.
So, as always, any napping related advice is welcome here.

Both my kids stopped napping around 13 months. It was a real pain in the butt. We would have a lay down on the bed, read 2 books, and then pretend to be quiet time, but it usually ended with me just being frustrated or amused by the crazy stuff they would do instead of resting.
I think napping is way over rated. Kind of messes up your day. BUT..I believe night time sleep is the best thing since sliced bread. And my kids weren't too bad about that. Not wonderful, but not too bad. So I will probably write them some checks this week, because of my gratitude for this. Not sure I ever thanked them enough.
Anyway, this isn't v. helpful, but I'm with Sam: DOWN WITH NAPPING!
I hope it works out best for you and Sam.
Thanks, LH and mm. I can't complain about the night-time sleep, so hooray for that! Sam sleeps for the nanny during the day too, so I know this is partly about making mom crazy. Going to be an interesting ride with this one.
I have no expert advice to offer here, just an idea - maybe he thinks you are AWESOME and therefore doesn't want to waste time sleeping when you're around?
I'm thinking Katie's on to something here.
Did you tell the lady that Sam's 2 naps in a day almost never totaled 3-4 hours in a day? I kind of doubt the one nap will be that long. However, I do think eventually he will take around a 2 hour nap, but probably not consistently. He's like his cousin, he keeps you on your toes! I know that doesn't make you feel any better now though!
Even if the kiddos I watch decide they are done with naps anytime soon, I will be laying them down for rest time, because I need it for my sanity, as I know you do too! Plus, at preschool they will still have nap/rest time, so I figured they may as well get used to it.
So for now, drink more wine until Sam's transition to one nap is over!
Didn't mean to put "in a day" twice in the first sentence, suppose I should proof read BEFORE publishing my comments.
Katie, this is obviously the case! How can I be less awesome? It would probably be too much work.
