The Training: Week Five

I let my sister talk me into running the Twin Cities Marathon again this year. The last one was in 2003 and I remember it fondly as The Time I Nearly Died. Or so it felt. And so I declared to my father at mile nineteen. My exact words: "I'm fucking dying." The run left me injured in other ways as well, and my right leg can't promise me that it'll actually stick with me through the entire training. I'm open to the possibility that this won't actually happen, but like most of my major life decisions, the damage will likely be done before I turn back. Nine miles already down this week. Twenty-one more to go.

I think my right hip is revolting along with yours. I don't know if it's sympathy pains or a show of solidarity by our hips, but my weak spot is definitely in the same place yours happens to be....

Maybe we're related - tee hee.

Have you been wearing your Chacos much, bdoc? I hope to join in on your hip problems soon. Well, not really the problems, just the running with my sisters part.

Whatever makes you ask such a question? TEe hee - I find personal satisfaction in my Chaco tan. It means I've done some rafting, backpacking or spending time at the lake. Good stuff.

You don't want hip probs, cdoc.

shoes are the key to injury-free running, bdoc. 2 pairs that you alternate between, so as to change the little muscles in your ankles that you use on a daily basis. your sister is resisting a second pair of shoes. the force across your knees and ankles is roughly 40x your body weight depending on your stride/form with every step/impact. somewhat less across your hip. your feet deserve a little help. anyone who puts their body through marathon training needs good shoes that are matched to their form.

apparently this blog entry is too long. it's my first ever. maybe the last.

hi sunnyd. welcome to the blog. i hope you become a regular like me ;-)

i have two pairs of shoes and i rotate between them. i think my problem is cross-training. i have little time to do much else than running and so my muscles, tendons, joints get the same exercise for 4 months straight while my other muscles, tendons, joints get nothin'. i have incorporated yoga and biking into my schedule in order to avoid the injuries .... and two pairs of shoes.

jdoc, you need two pairs of shoes - your hip depends upon it.

i'm regularly too verbose.

Good luck! That's something I've always wanted to do...or even just getting back into running again. But the truth is....I'M LAZY! I get tired just watching someone else run!!

I'm training for the Nike Women's on Oct. 22nd. This will be my fourth, but this is the first time my hip has been bothering me. I'll try that 2 shoe idea. Gotta go shopping!!!
