Late Night Update

I finished and submitted one of two papers. I did my part on the other one and am just waiting for a co-writer to do her part. The whole house is asleep save me. I should go to bed, but I'm clicking around the Internet instead. And there's nothing good out there, from what I can tell.

The Love That Never Sleeps

Dave has been away for a couple of nights and Sam can't seem to sleep without him in the house. "I just love him too much to sleep," he told me last night at bedtime when I put him back in bed the sixth time.

He didn't say much at 2:45 and 5:45 when he came to my room, but I assume it was the love that woke him those times as well.

Plasma Car

It's the last day of spring break. I meant to write two conference papers during this time. Instead I chased this one around the house and cuddled her and her brother up as much as possible. No regrets there.

The Break

It's spring break here. And while it hasn't been an exciting, getaway sort of break, it has been break-ish in it's own way. Here it is Wednesday, after all, and I haven't done a bit of work yet.

A few highlights:

We spent a long weekend at the cabin. Sam and Dave did projects around the house and washed the car. Eloise practiced her walking skills. And I began watching the hilarious Netflix series The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Well done, Tina Fey, btw.

Yesterday was a day home with the  kiddos. Eloise and I made a quick trip to Whole Foods while Sam enjoyed preschool. Then when we picked Sam up from school we made another quick trip to Whole Foods to return some jojoba oil that I, myself did not place in the cart. Eloise! I guess she was feeling dry?

Today's spring break adventures took us to the dry cleaner and Menards. We came home with only the items we meant to purchase: bird seed, jump rope, ball, and chocolates. Is it just me or is Menards one of the greatest places on earth? Seriously.

Next up, I plan to write the afternoon away while the kids hangout with our Fab Nanny, Heather. Then I'll spend the evening with my Fab Yoga Instructor, Stacy Jo.

It's not Florida, but I'll take it.

Blogging for Clarity

I've been doing a lot of soul searching lately, trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. This takes place a few times each year, but this time my disequilibrium seems pretty legit.

Basically, I can't shake the feeling that I should be home with my kids full time while they are young. I realize that any time off may leave my career options wanting in a few years when I'd be ready to work again, but that just doesn't seem like a good enough reason to keep working. Sure, I like my job. I like the part-timeness of it and the flexibility. And the work itself. But I've never been all that good at balancing expectations of work and family while also maintaining a standard of quality that I've come to expect of myself. I'm doing okay, I think, at being a mom and a career-woman. I'd like to be doing great, though. And for that, I may need to do one thing at a time.

Or seriously cut myself some slack.

There's no telling what will come out of this soul searching. Sometimes it's just searching. Like I said, I've been here before. And to be sure, I'll be here again. It's just that, maybe. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe.

You know?

Sniffling for Weeks

I'm convinced that I have a sinus infection. I've had this headache behind my eyes for a few days now and there's just no air moving through my nasal passages.

In situations like this it might seem like an advantage to have a physician living in the house. Yet when Dave did an ultrasound of my sinuses last night, he found no evidence of an infection and now I have no right to keep complaining about a condition that, apparently, I'm not suffering from.

I suggested that he might be missing something on the ultrasound. "I mean, that happens, right?" I asked.

"Not with me," he answered.

This is the kind of confidence I find desirable in a physician.

Just, a little less so in a partner.

I'd Rather Be

All week I've been trying to carve out time to do some writing for a conference paper. It's the very end of the week, and I finally have a couple of open hours.

I guess there are worse ways to spend a Saturday night. Although I can't think of any right now.
